About the place

The museum grew out of the collections of the Constanța and Balcic picture galleries, opened between 1935 and 1937, and was enlarged with works from the National Museum of Art and donations from Marius Bunescu, Ion Jalea and Boris Caragea. The old neoclassical building was originally Constanța's oldest school; the new building next to it went up between 1980 and 1982.

The ground floor has works by Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ioan Andreescu and Ștefan Luchian, the first floor a Pallady room with 35 works, many inspired by the seashore at Constanța, and the second floor the 'Group of Four': Nicolae Tonitza, Ștefan Dimitrescu, Francisc Șirato and the sculptor Oscar Han. The permanent exhibition covers a century of Romanian art with an emphasis on art inspired by Dobruja.
