About the place

The mixed botanical and zoological nature reserve of Pădurea Hagieni covers 392.9 hectares in the communes of Limanu and Albești and overlaps the Natura 2000 sites ROSCI0157 and ROSPA0094; its management plan was approved in 2016. It is an isolated forest in a steppe area, dominated by oaks, with stands of oriental hornbeam described by botanists as early as 1970.

The forest is a nesting place for many bird species, and in 2010 the spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) was recorded here. The village of Hagieni is about 14 km from Vama Veche by car. It holds 4.4 on Google from 34 reviews, which praise the quiet.

Good to know

  • Bring water and good shoes: this is a forest, not a laid-out park.
  • This is a reserve: stay on existing tracks and do not take plants or animals.
  • If you see a tortoise, leave it alone: it is a protected species.
