About the place

The reserve was set up by Decision 31/1980 of the Constanța County Council and confirmed as a protected area by Law 5/2000. In 2008 the newspaper Jurnalul Național described it as about 5,000 hectares, with one zone where diving is allowed for scientific purposes only and a buffer zone where swimming and fishing are allowed only from rowing boats. The Natura 2000 site Vama Veche – 2 Mai, about 12,300 hectares, covers the area.

On land, the shore between the two villages is largely wild: a low cliff, small sand-and-pebble beaches and stretches used by naturists. You can walk from Vama Veche to 2 Mai along the cliff edge or on the beach. It holds 4.7 on Google from 56 reviews, which praise the quiet.

Good to know

  • Wear proper shoes: the steps on the cliff are uneven, and there are stones in places where you enter the water.
  • Bring water and take your rubbish with you; reviews complain about litter left by others.
  • If you see a suspicious metal object on the beach, do not touch it and call 112: in June 2026 military divers destroyed a sea mine here.
