It is the symbol of the resort and holds 4.6 on Google from more than 1,000 reviews; a new breakwater built for the beach widening reaches to about 60 metres from it.
About the place
The ship was built in 1942 in Belfast by Harland and Wolff as the Empire Strength and sailed for almost 20 years for the Blue Star Line. From 1965 she had Greek owners and the name E. Evangelia. On 15 October 1968, sailing empty from Rijeka to Constanța, she ran aground off Costinești and was declared a total loss. She was 131.5 metres long.
A storm broke her in two in 2005, more of the hull collapsed into the water in 2023, and by 2025 the stern was flooded. The best views are from the breakwater at the north end of the beach, near the Pofta Pescarului restaurant, or from the boat that leaves from near the Obelisk in summer. Do not climb onto the wreck: it is decaying and dangerous.
Good to know
- Do not swim out to the wreck or climb onto it: it is broken in two and pieces of plating have come loose.
- In summer the boat to the wreck leaves from the landing stage near the Obelisk; the trip takes about 40 minutes.
- From the Obelisk it is about a 25-minute walk along the beach.
