About the place
Between 1970 and 1972 the architect Ion Mircea Enescu expanded the youth camp at Costinești, and several sculptors left works in concrete and stone around the resort. One of them, a 'signal' for the camp by Wilhelm Demeter, stood on the beach and was destroyed by the floods of September 2005. In June 2006 Demeter's concrete obelisk, the one you see today, was unveiled on the same spot.
Other works from those years by Wilhelm Fabini, Marin Gherasim, Silvia Radu and Mircea Ștefănescu survive around the resort, but many are decaying, and a work by Eugen Pătraș was demolished in early 2024. The Obelisk is the landmark everyone on the beach uses to find their way.
Good to know
- It is the easiest meeting point: everyone in the resort knows where the Obelisk is.
- In summer the boat to the wreck leaves from the landing stage next to the Obelisk.
- The beach faces east: in the morning the sun rises over the sea behind the obelisk.
