The sapropelic mud of Lake Techirghiol is the reason both resorts exist, and here you use it in the open air, at a 1960s facility reopened to the public in 2021.
About the place
Lake Techirghiol is a lagoon cut off from the sea by a sand bar, no more than 9 m deep, with water holding about 95 g of salt per litre; this is where the layer of mud used in treatments formed. Băile Reci no. 1 (the 'Cold Baths') were built in the 1960s on the Eforie Nord shore and are run by the Eforie Nord Clinical Hospital for Rehabilitation, Physical Medicine and Balneology (Efosan).
The method is cold-mud anointing: you spread a thin layer on your skin, sit in the sun for 30–60 minutes until it dries, then go into the lake, swim for 10–15 minutes and shower. There are separate sectors, one of them for families with children, showers with salt water and warm fresh water, sunbeds, a lifeguard, a first-aid room and parking. For the period after 1 September 2026, the hospital posted opening hours of 8 to 19.
Good to know
- Open in summer only, usually from June to September.
- Children go in free with a parent.
- The mud may only be used inside the sectors; bring a towel, flip-flops and drinking water.
